Food writer (Dogpatch neighbor) and photographer, Jun Belen, adds Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous to a long list of reasons to LOVE the Dogpatch neighborhood, writing “Aside from 260 sunny days in a year (on average) and the best burgers in the city at Serpentine, there’s Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous, the new old-fashioned ice cream and sweet shop from pastry chefs and owners Ian Flores and Anabelle Topacio.”

Partner/Owners, Flores and Topacio are both pastry chefs who worked for Wolfgang Puck ― Flores for Puck executive pastry chef Sherry Yard (he worked at Spago Beverly Hills, and was opening pastry chef at Spago Maui). Topacio completes the equation with a background as a baker for Brick Maiden Breads in Pt. Reyes Station and Firebrand in Oakland, creating the perfect combination of housemade ice-cream and sweet shop confections made from scratch using organic, seasonal, and local ingredients! To celebrate one year of business in the Dogpatch the pair gave away free junior-size scoops of “Birthday Cake” ice cream, a sweet cream flavored ice cream, studded with chocolate cake chunks and rainbow sprinkles.

This 20-seat ice cream shop across the street from Serpentine offers 8-10 ice cream flavors at any given time + baked goods and homemade candy. Has anyone tried the Ballpark yet? Seems like the perfect pairing with a day at AT&T Park just a short stroll away. I mean, really? Who can resist beer and peanuts?

Ice Cream in Winter, you say? Yes, please. I think Joe M. sums it up best -
“Okay, we all know that hot soup on a cold day is like having a glass of milk with a chocolate chip cookie…they just go together. Like a match made in heaven. But I’m here to tell you…..hot soup doesn’t have to be the only perfect match for a cold, winter’s afternoon. IMO, a cup of ice cream from Mr. and Mrs. hits the spot just as good as a bowl of ramen would. And if that ice cream is alcohol-flavored, well then the tummy party just got kicked up a notch!….So yeah, ice cream on a cold day is pretty damn awesome. And I can’t wait for the hot days to come back to make me go even more. I think that’s when I’ll kick it up a notch and get some chocolate sauce poured on. Oh, who am I kidding? I’m getting a sundae all the way!”

Dogpatch Makers Unite + Create @ The Workshop Residence

Once home to shipwrights and boilermakers—the same class of skilled craftsmen yet fill this sunny patch of San Francisco. They may be in the form of printmakers, fashion designers, photographers or even chocolatiers – but their industrious spirit and craft has found a home here. We say the best measure of a neighborhood is its neighbors, and Dogpatch is a “Bastion of Makers”. Have you heard of The Workshop Residence? The Makers-in-Residence” program, invites designers and artists from all over to live and manufacture their products on the premises which are then sold to the public at the warehouse, through local retailers, and online. Proceeds are split 50/50 between the artist and The Workshop Residence, and prices tend to be significantly less than other similar works of art. As Katie Popoff of PaperMag reports – Dogpatch is the neighborhood to be in San Francisco, and the new Yellow Building is the place to be in Dogpatch.

Seizing an opportunity to join the neighborhood’s burgeoning creative community, the brother-sister duo behind SF’s 30-year-old clothing boutique Modern Appealing Clothing, Ben and Chris Ospital, have joined forces with restaurateurs, Sher Rogat and Margherita Stewart Sagan, of Dogpatch pizzeria Piccino, to convert a 170-year-old horse stable into an artisinal mini-mart of sorts. Armed with a fresh coat of vibrant yellow paint, the aptly named Yellow Building, which opened in mid-March, will house a new outpost of Piccino and a branch of their famed Blue Bottle Coffee café, MAC’s second store and the specialty wine bar DIG. Moving to Dogpatch was a no-brainer, says Ben Ospital, who’s always believed “foot traffic and expensive real estate should take a backseat to doing something that really excites people.”

The Workshop Residence is located in Dogpatch’s burgeoning locally-made products district, which includes Modern Appealing Clothing store – which sells apparel produced in San Francisco – and Piccino, an Italian restaurant and coffee bar that creates meals from locally-grown food. Hatch started the business in Dogpatch because she wanted to be part of the neighborhood’s “newness.” It’s a “vibrant, frontier-like place,” she said.

Big Plans Floated for San Francisco’s Pier 70

Homes on Esprit Park is located within easy access to Downtown and what hopes to become a new San Francisco cultural and recreational destination point – Pier 70. Lying on the cusp of the Dogpatch Historical District, Pier 70 is one of the city’s last major pieces of waterfront. The Port of San Francisco is tasked with its future development and has, along with community input, created a detailed ‘Preferred Master Plan’ with the intent to create a new National Historic District. The plan for the 65-acre site south of Mission Bay is to restore its historic buildings, but maintain its working industrial shipyard, the oldest in continuous operation in the U.S. Since the area is no longer isolated from San Francisco’s downtown core, thanks to new developments in Mission Bay and the Third Street light rail, The Port also hopes to create a destination attraction with the 1886 Union Iron Works Machine Shop as its “crown jewel”.

“It’s like a cathedral,” said Beaupre. “We really think the public should be able to enjoy the grandeur of it, so we’re looking for a cultural use.” A few potential partners—including the Exploratorium and the National Maritime Museum—considered moving in but decided not to go forward.

Dogpatch Guide, Bruce Smith writes, “Previously we had only been able to peek through the windows of these buildings and imagine what they were like on the inside. We now walked down the time worn historic hallways where, if you listened closely, you could hear the buzz of workers and machines that had kept shipbuilding and repair a vital part of San Francisco. This had been a place where thousands of workers clocked in each day and many of the nations battleships were born, christened and launched. Going forward, City Guides will be able to guide with an informed voice about its significance in San Francisco’s history.

If the Port plan comes to fruition, this district will be revitalized and thrive once again – with thousands of people gravitating towards its shops, restaurants, historical structures and offices. Just last week The Huffington Post reported on this very topic–
Janet Carpinelli, a graphic designer and Dogpatch resident for 30 years, said most residents would agree. They are eager to see those beloved buildings restored to their glory after so many years of neglect.

“We have the bones of a really fantastic area here and we just want to see it enhanced,” said Carpinelli, president of the Dogpatch neighborhood association. “But we don’t want to see it developed in spite of the historic buildings; everything has to be done in this organic way to encompass the history. I’m not even a bittersweet chocolate fan but my financial advisor sent me a square of the bittersweet chocolate with burnt caramel topped with sea salt (eww! was my first thought but…) — and all I say is I hope his financial advice is as good as this little square of rapture. Darn you Poco Dolce for having such decadent bittersweet chocolate. I wanted to just try a sample, but it was so smooth and enticing, that I couldn’t help myself. By the way, that last comment was about the really handsome guy that came to help me with the samples. The chocolate is pretty smooth tasting too. If the guy wasn’t such eye candy, I probably would have purchased less stuff.

The story of Dogpatch: a rich history of shipbuilding industrial might, earthquake survival, economic decline and urban renaissance. An interesting tale of a charming neighborhood that maintains its offbeat and quaint appeal to this day, and a place within called Homes on Esprit Park, thoughtfully built with the industrious in mind – paying homage to both past, and present.

Dogpatch Then – An Eclectic History from Pasturelands to Shipyards

The area that is now Dogpatch has had many incarnations, from pasturelands to shipyards. Its first recorded use was by the Franciscan friars of Mission Dolores (formerly Mission San Francisco de Asis, established by Father Junipero Serra in 1776). Throughout most of the 19th century, the future site of the Schilling Wine Cellars complex remained quiet pasturelands. ….Following the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco companies were faced with the choice of rebuilding in the city or relocating to a new site outside of the city. Claus Schilling’s original company building on Brannan Street had been completely destroyed, but unlike many of his competitors he did not flee the city, instead choosing to begin construction of his new wine cellar in the Dogpatch/Potrero Hill district.

Located on the flats east of Potrero Hill, Dogpatch is an approximately nine square block area, generally bounded by Mariposa Street to the North, Tubbs Street (23rd) to the South, Highway 280 to the West, and Illinois Street to the East. Dogpatch contains architecturally and historically significant workers’ cottages, factories, warehouses and public buildings constructed between 1860 to 1945. It is one of the few neighborhoods to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire, and it is gateway to the oldest, largest and most intact historic industrial complex remaining in the city–the former shipyards and mills on the waterfront at Pier 70.

Doggone Friendly – A Great Spot on Four-legs or Two

Homes on Esprit Park is pet friendly! I mean…this is the Dogpatch, afterall… Homes on Esprit Park is an ideal place to live for dog owners. The eponymous park provides a large, off-leash area for your furry friend to exercise and socialize! We know our four-legged family members love being steps away from a grassy play area and open spaces to walk, hike and explore along San Francisco’s Central Waterfront, but our location sure is convenient and especially nice for those of us on two legs too.

Esprit park is awesome! Great place to play with your dog. We love taking our corgi to play ball. Even if the park is not fenced-in, Minnesota and Indiana are very quiet streets so it’s safe to have dogs off-leash. Best of all, we live two blocks away… the Dogpatch is very cool! Great little park only a short walk away from our new place! One not so great thing about living in the Dogpatch is that there isn’t a lot of grassy areas and almost no parks to speak of. Thankfully we found Esprit! It’s not a true “dog park”, but you can bring your dogs here and one side of the park is ok for off-leash play, while the other side is for picnics, on-leash dogs and other park guests. Taste an Evening in Campania @ Piccino Mon, Jan 30th

Monday, January 30th kicks off the 1st of (what we all hope) to be a series of tastings at Piccino, focusing on the wines of a particular region, whose wines taste of a place and warrant further exploration. First up: A Regional Taste of Italy: The Wines of Campania with importer, Oliver McCrum, an Italian wine specialist headquartered in the Bay Area. For the last 15 years, Oliver has imported clean, focused, unadulterated wines of character. His enthusiasm and endless curiosity for Italy’s native grapes has inspired us to keep learning, discovering, and tasting through Italy.

It feels like a wondrous discovery when you first walk into Piccino, the Dogpatch pizzeria that recently moved to a corner building a block from its original space. The entrance on Minnesota Street leads diners not only to the restaurant but to Dig wine bar and a MAC clothing store. If you walk around to 22nd Street, you’ll also find the little Piccino coffee bar. They’ve created their own little salon-like collective in this bright yellow 1850s-era house. This Sunday, Jan 29th 3 Fish Studios is teaming up with Sutton Cellars, plus Mama Cass will be rolling in to offer their famous Vietnamese sliders. Art. Wine. Food. (and special offers!) Sounds like the perfect San Francisco Sunday to us. It’s called Jug Sunday, it lasts from 1-4pm, and it’s a great time here in the Dogpatch.

Enjoy printmaking demonstrations with our neighbors at 3 Fish Studios, who will be selling their entire collection of original, affordable art at 20% OFF during the event. Sutton Cellars will be pouring samples of their 2010 Rattlesnake Rosé and 2010 Carignane. These wines will be released in the spring and they will be selling futures by the case at a fraction of the retail price. Tasting fee is only $5!

Get to know the neighbors

When they first moved to San Francisco, local artists Annie Galvin and Eric Rewitzer got their start selling art out of their garage. Now the couple makes their art (and teaches others how to do the same) out of their very own 3 Fish Studios, a small, homey collaborative art space in Dogpatch. Much of Galvin and Rewitzer’s art is San Fran-centric—both artists hone in on well-known local landmarks and recreate them into unique, often quirky, art pieces. Because the two agree: there is nothing like San Francisco.

Dogpatch Has Just the HUE for You

Stroll down to Romer Young Gallery in Dogpatch (1240 22nd St.) to take in Lucy Pullen’s HUE, one of 7×7 Magazine’s 6 Must-See Gallery Openings this month! You can catch the exhibit through February 11th, right here – in the neighborhood. What to expect? – Four brightly colored and playful Plexiglas sculptures let you break the normal boundaries around art exhibits by walking amongst them and taking photos at will…. In Lucy Pullen’s solo exhibition, HUE, the Canadian artist thrusts color, a miracle of perception too often relegated to the background of adult seeing, into a positively neotenous state of immediacy.

The artist writes: “These wall works are responsive to light and require movement, like a sculpture asks for circumnavigation… It is as if the sculptures and the wall works are trading roles.” The exhibition includes four sculptures, four wall works, and one video.
